New Season

Welcome to the sailing club blog for 2008.
Here you can find information about future events, as well as make
suggestions or leave feedback on an event. First on the calender is
the swim tests, either this thursday or next thursday. Email for
details. Also there is the come and try session next wednesday, from 5
to 8 pm at the watersports centre. Bring warm clothes and wet gear if
you have it!!

Sunday's Sailing 10-02-08

Another Sunday, and weather was extremely decent for once! The wind
was up and down Force 2-3, and the current was quite strong, so it was
one of those 2 laps and you're done jobs. Alas, we found that using a
plank as a centreboard means you cannot sail against the wind, so we
had to use engine power!!! 4 boats in all, with new recruit peter on
his first ever sail (Woohoo!!!) in a wayfarer, joined by another
wayfarer, a topper and a laser. Weather for wednesday is lookin sunny
(woohoo) but freezin and also totally windless

Clean up prosponed

If we have enough people this should take no more than 3-4 hours perhaps even 2!

clean-up and burns night

Hi guys,

Are you available the first weekend in Feb to take part in a clean up
of the water sports centre with all the other watersports clubs, it
will be a good way to meet and socialize with everyone in your own
club and the others club maybe we should bring all the booze the club
owns to the BBQ (see below), it may also be a good way to get our club
back in motion again. It is important that we get the water sports
centre sorted out so I hope you all will make the effort to come...

Also there is still sailing every sunday at 2pm at coleraine yacht
club (CYC). CYC is also hosting a burns night next saturday (26th Jan)
with haggis, booze and plenty of other non-haggis foods, its a good
way to meet the rest of the CYC memberes espically if you would like
to crew in the yacht races when they start in spring. Let me know if
you are interested so i can send numbers to Davy.

SUNDAY 16TH

SANTA SUNDAY This will be the last sunday of racing before Christmas day. All members taking part must wear an item of clothing or antlers to represent Xmas. The race should start at 2.30pm and there is mulled wine and mince pies afterwards in the club house. It is possible that Santa will make an appearance so those of you with very young family members can bring a small present for Santa to deliver.

FRIDAY 21ST

MEMBERS NIGHT. This will take the form of a Bottle Draw some party snacks and maybe Music (This has to be confirmed by the new Commodore). The prizes are for those tickets purchased on the night. The more you buy the better the chance you have of winning.

Hey guys its looking pretty wet tomorrow and the shipping forecast today is not so hot either, with a gale warning and force 5-7 winds, rough sea etc. However, tomorrow is supposed to be lightish winds so if its not too rainey, we could still arrange something. Update to follow tomorrow morning

Sunday Sailing Nov 11 07

A better turnout for sailing this sunday!! It was sunny if a bit chilly and there was decent wind in patches, though it was a bit changy sometimes. The bling topper got its first outing and showed it can move pretty well!! Also out was a club laser and another topper, plus a wayfarer, and Amy in a throwback Mirror with a kid, so all in all, good sailing!! As to who won, we never found out, cause the stuff hadnt got put on a laptop or something. When I know, you'll be informed, except if i sucked, which i think i did, in which case i wont say the results, which i havent yet...
Warm toasties afterwards really hit the spot, and there was a good crowd around the bar, though several people went on early. Twas especially nice to see Tom in the wayfarer ruling the waves, he's been kind enough to do rescue boat for a while now, so if there are any people out there with powerboat level 2 who could take turns on rescue boat and even out the load while getting good experience, come on down!!

Sailing today

And now the sailing forecast issued by the diabetes phd office, on behalf of the university sailing club, at 9.03 on Wednesday 7-11-07.
Its looking like 13 degrees centigrade, 17 mph wind, westerly direction, good visibility, so sailing is definately on today!! We will be sailing at coleraine yacht club though, as portrush will likely have quite a swell and also be more exposed to the wind. Start time is 2.30, meet outside coleraine yacht club.

For any one going for the first time, to get to coleraine yacht club from the university by car, go out the main entrance and turn right onto the cromore road, as if going into coleraine town. Turn right again at the boulevard, go to the end of the road and turn right, and the marina and yacht club will be on your left besides the council buildings. To walk from uni, cross the field behind the Riverside theatre to get to the portstewart road where the rugby field is, then turn left and you'll see the council buildings almost immediately.
Wetsuits are available for those who dont have one, but bring your own footwear please.

Coleraine club was the venue for the latest joint sailing between coleraine and the university club. There was an good turnout of people but only three boats, with a family piled into a Mirror and three beginners out in two wayfarers, though they got pushed aside as a rivalry for river supremacy emerged between me and Steve. Boats collided at speeds of up to 0.0005 miles an hour, as always there were a few hairy moments, as my t-shirt was a bit on the small side.
Wind was.... not really making its presence known, enough to get down the river (which is, erm, kinda flowing that way anyway), but not to get back! T Brolly stepped in to tow us back with Denz. Davie promises toasties next weekend, and there was talk of a seniors vs students racing showdown in the pipeline. All in all, a pretty good day! Hope for more wind next week. Sharon brought her topper down as well, its got a bit of bling, which erm, well, yeah, a bit of topper bling. Stickers. Sigh...

There is sailing every Sunday in Coleraine Yacht Club.You must be there @2pm in order to get a boat and life jacket. Steven Bolster usually runs these sessions so just ask for him if you do not recognise anyone from the club. Please bring a waterproof jacket and old runners. If you do not have a wetsuit, there are a small number of wetsuits available at the club.

Swim test

The swim test is in Coleraine Leisure Centre this thursday the 11th of october between 8 and 9pm. It is compulsary for members to complete 50m (two lenths of the pool) in order to part-take in club activities.

There will be a meeting at 1pm on tuesday the 9th of October for all members of the sailing club and for everyone interested in joining the sailing club at the students union bar. The meeting should last no longer than 20 minutes. You will be able to sign up for the weekend sailing course at this meeting.

Sailing will be at 6 sharp today @ Portrush, weather permitting we hope to sail to portstewart harbour and back (s o please try to be on time). It may be an idea to bring a snack and a drink to have. Remember to bring appropriate clothing (that includes warm hat, footwear, sailing gloves (if you have them), waterproof jacket/Cag, etc).

8 hour race updates

Registration starts at 9:30 and the race starts at 11, we will need to be there for 10 ish to get everyone registered and the boats ready for the start.

There is a BBQ on saturday evening £6/person and toasties will be available all day. If anyone is not sailing they are also looking for people to help with rescue boat and registration.

tha annual 8 hour race is on at CYC on the 23rd of June. We need as many people as possible for the UUC team this year. Team will be divided into pairs and each pair will do approx one hour of the race. It is a fun day with a BBQ and plenty of drink!

There will be sailing at Portrush Yacht Club this evening at 6pm, anyone who is not a member of Portrush YC will need to join tomorrow (£10 student, £45 for anything else-this amy seem steep but is infact a good deal). We Hope to take out our own boats(420,wayfairer) and PYCs boats (toppers and lazers). Weather looks to be excellent :)

February sailing weekend

There will be a sailing weekend held at Portrush yacht club on the second weekend in February. Toppers and Lazers are used as teaching boats. Level 1 courses are aimed at Beginners (Start Sailing), Level 2 at Improvers (Basic Skills). Students may take either Level 1 or 2 during the weekend depending on ability. Having completed Level 2 Basic Skills and gained a season's sailing experience you can try the Level 3 modules of Seamanship Skills and Day Sailing. Logbooks and certificate are included in the price (£30).
There are 11 places for this weekend and teching will start on the friday (9th) evening. If you would like to take part or would like further information please email Amy at Mullee-a1@ulster.ac.uk asap

Swim test tomorrow 5th of October 2006 @ 8:15pm, Coleraine Swimming pool (near the train station). Only two lenths of the pool in your own time. It is important that everyone hoping to participate in watersports has completed this test.

Sailing continues as normal every Wednesday (6:30pm) and Sunday (2pm). On Sunday the 10th Coleraine Yacht Club will be hosting a dingy regatta (with a small entry fee per boat) with prizes and BBQ. We are also planning a trip with the Ocean Youth Trust (25th-27th) aboard the Seven Sisters-who knows where we will end up!
September also brings the beging of the new acedemic year and with it a fresh bunch of students and hopefully new members to our club. The freshers fayre is on the morning of the 27th, so we will need all hands on deck (cheesy i know) to help out with that. Any ideas for the stand welcome. Also any ideas for how we can get money (fundraising, grants, begging, stealing) are also welcome.
